Starting a New Business

PFMA is a members association and therefore our technical advice is provided to member companies only. PFMA membership eligibility requirements can be found here. However, we do have some top tips on starting out.

Legislation: If you would like to know about the relevant pet food manufacturing legislation, a good starting point would be the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) website. General information on legislation, labelling and composition of animal feed (including pet/bird food) can be found here.

Codes of Practice: There are also Industry Codes of Practice that should be regarded. It will help you with manufacturing and labelling enquiries. These are recognised in EU legislation.

Nutritional Requirements: For details of dog and cat nutrition, minimum and maximum levels of recommended nutrients, please open the check Fediaf's advice.

Raw Materials: If in future you intend to use any material of animal origin, you need to check with the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) regarding the relevant legislation, for example, approval requirements, permitted raw materials, processing standards, etc.

Registration: For information on putting your product on the market and to learn more about how to apply for approval and registration, please refer to the advice of Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Labelling: For more information on labelling, please see ‘A Guide to Pet Food Labelling’ on our website.
