PFMA Parrot Nutrition Symposium 2022

A unique learning and networking opportunity for all parrot experts and keepers to exchange knowledge and best practice on feeding, nutrition and behaviour of parrots.


Following the success of the PFMA Rabbit Symposium in 2018, PFMA will be holding the second pet-specific seminar and discussion forum, this time all about the family of Psittacidae or parrots and their nutrition, health and management when kept in captivity. 

Objectives of the Symposium

• To provide the latest knowledge on parrot (and pet birds) nutrition and welfare

• Opportunity for all attendees to take part in discussions

• To identify key educational messages and next steps in scientific research

• A networking opportunity for parrot/bird professionals, keepers and enthusiasts

Format of the Symposium 

There will be a series of talks, from avian and nutrition experts, on different aspects of parrots and indoor birds' health and welfare in relation to nutrition and feeding behaviour. There will also be group discussions and a panel Q&A session to identify key outcomes of the event. Lunch and refreshments will be provided throughout the day and there will an opportunity to visit the zoo after the symposium.

9.30 – Registration, coffee and networking

10.15 – Opening of the session and first block of presentations

  • Forty years of keeping parrots healthy - good nutrition is a major factor 
  • Poor plumage? Too fat to fly? Clinical parrot nutrition - common problems and solutions

12.00 – Lunch 

13.00 – Second block of presentations

  • Parrot food production, from fields to feeding stations 
  • Pet parrots’ feeding best practice and behavioural enrichment 

14.00 - Break-out group discussions, teas and coffee

14.30 – Panel Q&A and conclusion of the event by chair

15.00 – Close of the symposium and an opportunity to visit the zoo
