Our Priorities

The PFMA Pet Food Vision - Placing pets at the centre of everything we do.

PFMA's Pet Food Vision focuses on the 4 pillars of excellence underpinning our industry – Animal Welfare, Nutrition, Safety & Standards, and Sustainability. In addition to our pillars of excellence, PFMA and its members are champions of responsible business conduct and competitiveness.

   Animal Welfare

The welfare of both farm animal and companion animals is fundamental to us and we recognise that success in these areas will come through collaboration. As a result, PFMA is a proud cosponsor of the All-Party Group for Animal Welfare (APGAW) where we join other influential voices in the welfare sector to ensure animal welfare is a key consideration.

PFMA works hard to encourage responsible pet ownership. We work in partnership with organisations including the Canine Feline Sector Group and National Pet Month to provide education around healthy lifestyles for companion animals (beyond food and feeding).

Please see the PFMA Animal Welfare Framework.

   Pet Nutrition

We believe that animal welfare starts with great quality nutrition. Our members are responsible for feeding the 50 million plus pets in the UK and we take that responsibility very seriously. As an industry, we are committed to providing high quality, nutritious, and safe pet food, and providing clear guidelines on how to responsibly feed pets. We work closely with the European Pet Food Association (FEDIAF), and other leading authorities to achieve a balanced regulatory regime for the production of nutritious and safe food and are committed to continuously raising the bar across industry.

   Safety & Standards

Pet food is subject to over 50 pieces of legislation and all members sign up to the PFMA Charter and Codes of Practice annually. These detail the legal requirements and safety & quality standards they must meet. Read more…

We are proud champions of some of the highest feed safety and animal welfare standards in the world. We work hard to ensure these are maintained. This is particularly important as we carve out a new position in the world post EU-Exit and embark on trade deal negotiations. Read more about our Trade Priorities.

We encourage our members to have responsible sourcing policies and traceability programmes in place to ensure high standards and maintain trust.

The pet food industry is very mindful of the role it plays in the responsible use of resources in pet food production, including minimising, wherever possible, its environmental impact. PFMA has a dedicated Sustainability Committee and priority areas include: Packaging & Recyclability, Sustainability of Pet Food Ingredients, Animal Welfare, and the Environmental Impacts of Pet Food Production. PFMA works in partnership with a number of organisations in this area including FDFWRAP and we are a supporter of the UK Plastic Pact.

 Responsible Business Conduct

responsible pet food manufacturer takes safety and quality very seriously and they will have defined processes and standards in place to ensure this. PFMA members sign up to the PFMA Charter and Codes of Practice annually, which detail the legal requirements and safety & quality standards they must meet. This also covers the area of marketing communications to ensure honest advertising within the industry.

In terms of achieving membership, only eligible companies can become members, through an application process involving references, a site visit and committee review. The majority of UK pet food companies choose to be members because they see its value, even though membership is voluntary. Find out more about what it means to be a PFMA member.

PFMA supports an innovative, resilient, resource-efficient, and safe pet food sector. As we prepare for EU Exit, there is no better time than now for pet food manufacturers to focus on growing exports. We are proud to promote British pet foods that are developed in line with our areas of excellence – Animal Welfare, Nutrition, Safety & Standards, and Sustainability.
