The Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA), Aviation House, 125 Kingsway, London, WC2B 6NH

As the pet food industry, we believe we have a collective responsibility to maintain a balance between the positive societal benefits of pet ownership and protecting the environment for future generations.

Pet owners want to feed their pets in a way that respects the environment. Sustainable raw materials, environmentally friendly production, recyclable packaging materials – all these factors play a major role in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the pet food industry.

We strive to be at the forefront of technology, using latest innovations wherever possible to minimise the depletion of resources while maximising safety standards.

PFMA supports its members to drive change towards a more sustainable future. We believe that by working together, we can make a difference.

Through a dedicated Sustainability Committee, PFMA has identified priority areas for current focus:

National Pet Food Strategy

In 2019, Defra commissioned an independent review, which led to the development of the National Food Strategy (part 1, 2020 and part 2, 2021).

The UK Government have committed to respond within six months with a White Paper, following the publish of Part 2. They have also requested a review on the progress made by the NFS after 12 months.

Perhaps not surprisingly, given the remit, the NFS makes no reference to pet food. Nevertheless, the pet food sector will be impacted directly by a number of the recommendations in the NFS.

This National Pet Food Strategy developed by PFMA will therefore address the recommendations on the NFS, but at the same time put forward a number of its own recommendations to address the future needs of the pet food market in the UK.
