With around 43% of the population owning a pet, the pet industry in the UK continues to grow. The pet food market in 2007 was valued at £1.7bn, up 3% from 2006. Health and nutrition remains a key sector trend. Consumers are increasingly focusing on high quality, premium pet foods for their dogs, cats and other small pets.
Cats and dogs continue to be the most preferred companion. There are around 7 million each of dogs and cats in the UK.
Fish (kept both indoors and out) and birds continue to be popular, but there are also now around 1.7 million small animals; including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and rats.
