Pet Food Ingredients Print E-mail

The selection and use of materials and ingredients is critical to the nutritional profile, safety, quality and palatability of pet foods.

The pet food industry uses a range of animal based materials, and plant-based materials, which are the by-products of the human food and agricultural industries. The use of these materials complements the operations of these industries.

  • All raw materials used by the industry come from animals which have passed veterinary inspections as fit for human consumption.

  • Member companies only use materials from species which are generally accepted in the food chain. The PFMA uses materials of beef, lamb, poultry, pork, fish, rabbit and game.

Members of the PFMA are aware of the need for conservation of world resources and consider sustainability and cultural and ethical aspects when sourcing raw materials. In order to ensure public and animal health and safety, the PFMA closely monitors all aspects of farm animal health and disease.
These factors are all reflected in PFMA's Raw Material Policy and in member companies own in-house policies and practices.
